why is it that when a western person lives abroad he/she is called an "expatriate" whereas when an eastern/non-western person lives abroad he/she is called an "immigrant"...

Maybe it is the host country that calls them that? Saudi has a lot of Eastern/non-westerners living there and they are not called immigrants.
hmmm yeah I suppose, but those same ppl who are called expats in Saudi will be called immigrants had they been in the West.
anyway, I just meant it as a random rhetorical question :)
I wonder if it has anything to do with- 1. if the person wishes to become a citizen of the new country or 2. if the new country has laws that will ever allow that person to become a citizen.
For example, when a person comes to the US, many times they would like to become a citizen or green card holder, so it makes sense to use "immigrant". When a person goes to Saudi, it is usuall only for work purposes and Saudi doesn't allow them to apply for citizenship anyway, so it makes sense to use "expat".
Just a though.
yeah good point, but even ppl who are say in england or the states for the purpose of working only and not taking up citizenship are referred to as immigrants, rather than expats.
but yeah i know what u mean with regards to not being able to take up citizenship in the gulf.
